EXPANSION CONTINUE]) 05,000 PASSENGERS CARRIED Reference to the continued expansion of internal air services was made by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, in the Public Works Statement. He said a feature of the operations had been the regularity and safety that had been achieved, ■ipd this showed that the aerodromes and air route facilities were being developed on sound lines.
For the year ended June 30, 1939, there were 2015 miles of air lines. Mr. Semple stated. The distance flown totalled 1,992,159 miles, and 65,483 passengers, 224,7341 b, cf freight and 332,6481 b. of mail had been carried. There were now 59 licensed aerodromes, 10 emergency landing fields, six new fields initially licensed, and 16 new fields under development.
The provision of base facilities for the overseas air services was mentioned and the Minister said that, in anticipation of and to prepare for possible future developments of aviation in the Pacific, the department had equipped and dispatched an expedition into the Pacific Hr carry out preliminary surveys for landing facilities. Investigatory work in this connection was proceeding.
