PERSONAL

Mr. Stanley G. While, son of Mrs. J. W. White, of Rahui, Havelock North, left for Wellington yesterday to join the New Zealand Royal Air Force. Mr. White was trained by the Hawke •s Bay and East Coast Aero Club and is the present club captain. He piloted his own machine from England to Australia in 1934, and while in the Old Country he served for a time with the R.A.F., obtaining a short-term commission.

A member of the New Zealand Permanent Military Staff in Wanganui since 1930, Sergeant-Major H. D. Harvey has been promoted to lieutenant in the New Zealand Permanent Forces. A zealous and popular officer, Lieutenant Harvey ierved with the Australian Forces at Gallipoli and in Fra nee, and when serving with the second brigade was promoted to lieutenant in the field. In 1924 Lieuten-

ant Harvey joined the New Zealand Permanent Staff as a stall-sergeant, and, after serving in Palmerston North for some years was transferred to Wanganui, the headquarters of the Wellington West Coast Regiment, as staff' sergeant-major.

Mr. A. W. Thompson, headmaster of the Terrace End School, has been appointed an acting-inspector to the Wanganui Education Board consequent on the death of Mr. W. J. Boden, senior inspector of the board. Mr. Thompson will carry out the duties of inspector until Christmas, and in the meantime Mr. L. M. iMorine, the first assistant, is acting as headmaster of the Terrace End School.
