FAMOUS SUFFRAGETTE
MADE BANKRUPT AT 96 STEP AT .OWN REQUEST BELFAST, Aug. 3. The affairs of Mrs. Charlotte Despard, of Whitehead, County Antrim, famous suffragette leader and sister of the first Earl of Ypres, were mentioned in the court in Belfast. Mr. Nicholson, appearing for her, said she was 9G years old. She had been adjudicated bankrupt at her own request, and offered 10s in the pound, which the official assignee would not accept. Her income last year was £1199 13s Id. It had been much larger. Mr. Warnock, for some of the creditors and an official assignee, said Mrs. Despard gave power of attorney last September to John Mulvenna, her secretary and chauffeur, and she had run into debt to the extent of £IOOO in 18 nlonths.
The Lord Chief Justice appointed an independent creditors’ assignee and adjourned'the matter for three weeks. Mrs. Despard marched with Mrs. Pankhurst in the 1906 “raid” on the House of Commons, and during the campaign she went to prison. When she was 82 she joined in a women’s march to Hyde Park to demand an equal franchise for men and women.
