STOCK LOSSES
ESTIMATE OF 10 PER CENT BANKS PENINSULA FIGURES The stock losses suffered by flock owners on Banks Peninsula during the snowstorm in July are considered to be about 10 per cent of the total flocks in the district. Inquiries made toy the Live Stock Division of the Department of Agriculture confirm the report that the losses were between 10,000 and 12,000, and that the heaviest losses were suffered in the Eastern Bay areas, from Holmes Bay to the Akaroa Lighthouse on fhe eastern side of the peninsula. There were also heavy losses on the east side of the main ridge, from Wainui to the Hill Top. These losses are accounted for toy the fact that during the snowstorm there was a heavy southerly gale blowing, and while fhe southerly faces were blown fairly clear of snow the drifts were very heavy on the eastern faces. Some estimates of the losses run as high as 15,000. The highest individual losses of sheep are reported to be about 300. | While the main ltosses were older | ewes, there were many young sheep I lost as well, and the effect of the ! storm is also being felt during the lambing season.
