SHORTENING LINE
TACTICS OF POLES MASTERLY PRECISION WITHDRAWAL OF FORCES NO DECISIVE CLASH YET (Reed. Sept. 9, 3 p.m.) BRUSSELS, Sept. 8. Belgian and Dutch correspondents with the Polish forces assert that masterly precision characterises the withdrawal of their troops. They cannot join battle with the vastlysuperior German forces along a 1600mile front, and so are shortening their lines. *
Marshal Smigly-Rydz is expected soon to order a halt and announce resistance. No pitched battle of a decisive character has yet been fought. Observers believe that the bulk of the Polish army has not yet been placed in the 'field. Nothing has been seen or, heard of the operations cf numberless small tanks which it possesses. The Germans are advancing over a level terrain in dry weather whereas the autumn and hilly country would greatly hamper their mechanised forces.
