ASSAULTS TURNED BACK

CLAIMS. BY POLAND BROADCAST BY RADIO - '(Reed. Sept. U, 12 noon) " NEW-YORK, Sept. 9. Conflicting German 'and Polish claims in broadcasts have continued the uncertainty regarding’ Warsaw’s fate. The Berlin correspondent of the New York Times states that the Nazis have begun to sweep around Warsaw, endeavouring to force its surrender without further struggle. The Nazis admit that armoured units had not reached the centre of the city. They declared it would not become second Madrid, chiefly because civilians were taking part. They considered the franctireurs would be shot out of hand.

From Budapest, it is stated that the Warsaw radio station'announced that all assaults were turned back. Thirty-two Nazi.tanks were destroyed.

"The city is drowned. by the roaring of aeroplanes and the. explosions of heavy bombs, and flames are leaping from buildings against the jetblack sky,” the announcements stated. ‘ Women are supplying soldiers with food; also in many places they have thrown hand grenades at onrushing Germans.”

Men and women announcers were heard through an almost • constant wail of air-raid warnings.

“It does not matter if bombs destroyed the old Grand Theatre; it ought to have been demolished long ago.” was one good-humoured observation.
