SUBMARINES FAR AFIELD RUTHLESSNESS DENIED MORE VESSELS SUNK TWO ELUDE U-BOATS (Elec, Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed, Sept. 11, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 10. The Ministry ol Information stated that virtually all German merchant ships have been swept from the high seas, many being captured. Frequently crews scuttled the vessels before abandoning ship.

The Ministry emphasised that the crews invariably reached safety.

“It appears that German submarines are now operating far afield, but our attacks and counter-measures are unremitting,” the Ministry of Information adds. A further communique from the Ministry of Information states that the British steamers Winkleigh and Goodwood were torpedoed and sunk. The crews were rescued. Several of the Goodwood's crew were injured, the captain’s legs being broken. Submarines chased the Warwick Castle ana Chloris, but they eluded the attackers.

Two German merchantmen, the Baldur and the Vegesack, are reported to have gone ashore on the Norwegian coast. Sinking of Tanker

The Amsterdam correspondent of the Associated Press of America says that a message from the Netherlands steamer Breedyk reported that the British tanker Kennebec was torpedoed and sunk. The entire crew of 32 were saved by the Breedyk. The location is not given. A New York report says that the Anglo-American Oil Proprietors are owners of the Kennebec. This company is a subsidiary of the American Standard Oil Company. A Helsinki message says that 10 Finnish ships carrying cellulose and timber for English and other ports passed through the Nazi minefields in .he Baltic. A Berlin announcement states that die Nazi High Command denies that it has ordered an unlimited submarine warfare, but declares that the navy was commanded to abide by International Law.

The Goodwood, built in 1928, was a steamer of 5008 tons, the Winkleigh a steamer of 5055 tons built in 1927, and the Kennebec of 5548 tons built in 1919.

The Baldur, of 5805 tons, was built in 1929 and the Vegesack, built in 1920, was of 15G6 tons.
