WHIRLWIND FINISH

CANTERBURY’S PACE TELLS WEST COAST DEFEATED (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Well held for the greater part of the game, Canterbury finished spectacularly against West Coast on Lancaster Park Oval on Saturday, and won by 24 points to 6. The margin is greater than the run of play justified, because with less than a quarter of an hour to go Canterbury were leading by only five points. In the last 15 minutes the West Coast defence weakened slightly, and the Canterbury wingers secured three flashing tries between them, the opening for the last of which was made in his own 25 by the Canterbury full-back, A. L. Ellis.

Throughout the greater part of the game the Coast forwards, led by R. R. King, Birchfield and I. Gardner, tore into the play in typical Coast fashion and set off from one end of the field to the other in fiery raids; ill fact, every man in the Coast pack gave an excellent display. The only drawback was that some of the young Coast backs lacked experience. R. Vincent, the half-back, L. Williams, second five-eighth, and A. Lindbom, full-back, stood out for sure and alert work. I. Lynch and A. Vaughan ran strongly on the wings, and J. Keating and J. Weir played their parts ably*on the inside. Better Team Work Canterbury’s team-work was better than against Otago, and the forwards showed marked superiority in the line-out"play. In addition, the inside backs handled better and the whole line raced into action with pace and precision.

The first match, played early in the season at Greymouth, was a draw, six points all. West Coast were not so strong on this occasion, mainly because of several last-minute changes. Yet under the leadership of the All Black", King, they made a determined fight to gain mastery. In the van Canterbury were tested grimly in every ruck and in every line-out. The scorers for Canterbury were Allen, Roberts (3), and Cartwright (2). Ballantyne converted three tries. For West Coast, Lindbom kicked two penalty goals.
