POLISH PEOPLE WHITEHALL MESSAGE ANGLO-FRENCH STAND OPINIONS FROM ROME BALKANS MAY BE NEXT (Reed. Sept. 8,2 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 7. A broadcast to the Polish people through their Ambassador in London from the British Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, gives an assurance, which, it is believed, will demolish any hope which Herr Hitler might have that Britain and France will consent to peace after a defeat of the Polish armies or the capture of Warsaw. The Rome correspondent of the New York Times says that if the Polish resistance collapses Germany will be free to turn her attention in other directions and it is expected that the Balkans will first feel the weight of the Reich's new strength, thus touching Italy’s vital interests and if there is war in that Peninsula, Borne could with difficulty continue her neutrality. On the other hand, tnere is talk of 11 Duce mediating should Warsaw be taken by the Germans, thinking that England and France would abandon Poland, despite Britain’s denials. It is believed that II Duce will not agree. The Italian feeling is that he would lay himself! open to certain rcbufL It must be remembered that Signor Mussolini’s policies these days are Italian and not German-Italian.
