WAR IN CHINA
TEINTSIN DISCUSSIONS FATE OF FOUR CHINESE (Elac. Tel, Copyright—United Proas Assn.) (Reed. Sept. 8, noon.) LONDON, Sept. 7. In the House of Commons, the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. R. A. Butler, announced that the ■Tientsin conversations had been suspended. He added that the British Government was willing and anxious to continue the conversations, in the hope of reaching an agreement on outstanding points. Considerable criticism followed the announcement that the foUr Chinese charged with terrorism had been handed over to Japan. Replying, Mr. Butler stated that many technical and legal questions were involved, and the Government had taken the best advice, and had regard to the decision of the High Court.
JAPAN STANDS ALOOF WAR IN EUROPE LONDON, Sept. 7. Japan has informed Britain that she does not intend to be involved in; the European war, and has asked 1 Britain to refrain from measures, likely to be prejudicial to Japan's position in China. A message from New York states that official notification of Japan’s neutrality discredits the reported possibility of an Italo-German and Russo-Japanese military axis. : COL. SPEAR TRANSFERRED (Reed. Sept. 8, 11,30 a.m.) PEKIN, Sept. 7. Lieutenant-Colonel Spear, a British officer, who has been held < by the Japanese, has been transferred to Pekin, in custody from Kalgan.
