JAPANESE AWARD
PRESENTATION TO MR KIRK Mr. K. Gunji, Consul-General for Japan, this week handed to Mr. J. R. Kirk, Wellington, ihe award forwarded for him by the Kokusai Burika Shinkokai (Japanese Cultural Society) ot Tokio. In 19J7 the Japanese Cultural Society invited papers upon the subject of friendly relations between Australia and Japan, and the paper of Mr. Kirk received the award of the society’s gold medal tor thn year, the medal being the gitt of Prince Konoye, then Prime Minister of Japan. An embargo on the export of gold prevented the authorities from sending the gold medal, but several volumes of works dealing with Japanese subjects were dispatched direct to Mr. Kirk. Now the award lias been completed by the reception of the society’s certificate, and a beautiful and costly piece of Japanese art in the form of a choice cloisonne (in Japan known as shippo) vase.
