HOLDING OUT

POLES AT GYDNIA NAZI BOMBING RAIDS CONTINUED BRUTALITY PLIGHT OF REFUGEES CAPITAL EVACUATED (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Sept. 7, 11 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 6. A Warsaw communique states that the Poles continue to hold Gydnia and have captured a German antitank gun. Seventy German bombers raided Warsaw on Tuesday, dropping explosives and incendiary bombs and causing casualties. Anti-aircraft fire brought down eight. It is added that German aviators continued the aerial brutality, bombarding towns, railway stations and columns of refugees. Polish planes effectively bombed German tank columns near Chiechanow and Radomska. Warsaw repeats the claim that Berlin was bombed from the air, it being declared that 30 planes participated. Other reports from Warsaw say that the citizens of the Polish capital are cheerful despite the inconvenience of continuous artillery and air bombardments. Cinemas and theatres remain open until dusk. Cafes and restaurants are carrying on with reduced staffs.

The radio station regularly includes news ‘bulletins in the German language giving lists of names of Germans taken prisoner and adding a few words of comfort to their families in Germany. The wholesale evacuation of Warsaw is being rapidly carried out.
