Burns Club Function
The reception room at Le Grand Cafe was a bright and cheerful place on Tuesday night, when the Gisborne Burns Club held a successful social and old-time dance.
The first part of the evening was devoted to the presentation of a delightfully diversified programme, under the direction of Mr. J. Armstrong, a very appreciative audience greeting each item with well-merited applause. Much-enjoyed vocal solos were contributed by Mesdames Knight, Hamil‘on, Morton, and Messrs. J. Armstrong and Williams, and Mrs. Knight and Mr. Morrison were heard to advantage in a vocal duet, while elocutionary numbers given by Mrs. Morton and Mr. T. Hay, respectively, met with encouraging approval. A popular novelty, a pipe solo, by Miss Burgess, Te Karaka, was one of the highlights of the programme, and a fine display of Highland dancing, in costume, was given by Misses C. Perston, A. Shields and King. The accompaniments were played with understanding by Mrs. Aitken and Piper McDonald. Music for dancing was supplied by Mrs. Aitken, and Messrs. Patterson and’ Webster contributed extras, the supervision of the floor being efficiently carried out by ■ Mr. Aitken Supper was served infromally. The committee responsible for the successful organisation of the function comprised Messrs. T. Hay, J. Armstrong, Aitken, McDonald, Harris and Sim, Mesdames Neame, Rhinesmith, McDonald, Kane, Dempsey, Knight, McMurray, and Miss Marshall. Guests and Their Frocks Among those present were Mrs. F. A. McPhail (Napier), wearing a frock of midnight blue crushed velvet with silver accents; Mrs. Turner, bracken bi’own printed cloque; Mrs. W. Paltridge, twilight blue patterned crepe; Mrs. H. Wilson, frock of black ring velvet; Mrs. Neame, black needlerun lace; Mrs. E. Ansel], black faille; Mrs. Faulkner, black georgette accented with corsage spray of pink flowers; Mrs. F. J. Williams, black cloque; Pinching, frock of tabac brown crepe; Mrs. Thornton, cinnamon brown patterned crepe, and velvet coatee; Mrs. Biggar, black cloque; Mrs. J. Morton, black faille accented with touches of green; Mrs. J. Williamson, hyacinth pink cloque; Mrs. Freebairn, navy blue taffetas, and black velvet coatee; Mrs. Dempsey, frock of black panne velvet ornamented with a sorsage spray in autumn tonings; Mrs. F. Clarke, black cloque accented with a diamante clip, Mrs. McMurray wore a frock of navy blue faille; Mrs. Race, Marina green taffetas; Mrs. Knight, valley green lace, and black velvet cape; Mrs. Paine, flame-coloured faille; Mrs. F. R. Bould, frock of rosewood lace, and velvet coatee to tone; Mrs. Cameron, black ring velvet; Mrs. Shields, black and white printed crepe; Mrs. Rhinesmith, frock of tabae brown self-patterned cloque; Mrs. Middleton, black faille; Mrs. Douglas, black georgette and lace; Mrs. I;.
