Business and Professional Women’s Club

Tho chair was taken <by Miss C. Kay at the fortnightly meeting of the Gisborne Business and. Profesr sional Women’s Club, held in Le Grand Cafe on Tuesday evening. It was announced that the membership of the club had reached 100. “Impressions of America” was . the subject chosen by the speaker for the evening, a local resident who recently has be on. travelling in that country. Mrs. I. F. Puflett was appointed to the chair for the next meeting. Golf Notes An L.G.U. medal match, played in conjunction with the last qualifying round for the championships, figured m the programme for the members of the Poverty Bay Ladies’ Golf Club m Tuesday afternoon. The winners, Mrs. Bean in A division and Mrs. R. W. J. Edwards in the B division, were also each awarded a trophy donated by Mrs. L. T. Burnard for the best score over ■line “sealed” holes. The draw for the club championships, which take place on September 12-14, has been posted, and keen interest is centring in the fixture. Honours in the A division for the monthly tankard for August were inncxed by Miss M. Foster, and Mrs. V Jensen emerged the winner in the J division. League in Auck:d, at a special meeting of the executive committee this week, came to an agreement to undertake work again during the present crisis. \ motion was passed in which the league offered its services to the Red Cross Society, asking the society to give the league something definite to undertake. It is the desire of the league to work through the Red Cross Society, while still retaining its own individuality. I* was stated at the meeting that members of the Victoria League Young Contingent had been attending Red Crqss classes in. first-aid for the past two months, and that when the course was completed the girls would form a Victoria League detachment. Turang'a Croquet Chib The monthly meeting of the committee of the Turanga Croquet Club was held at the home of Mrs. A. J. Barnard, Hurahura road, on Tuesday afternoon, members present including Mesdames A. J. Barnard, chairman. F. E'. Ormiston, M. Lawless, Simpson, T. Wilson, Ansell, J. S. Wauchop, Falconer, Ingram, J. Webb, Bayliss, CorcOran and Harding. A vote of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mrs. A. Gardiner The opening of the 1939-40 season was set down for the first Saturday in October. The amalgamation of the three local croquet club's in connection with the promotion of a croquet fixture to further the candidature of Miss N. Henderson, the sports representative in the centennial queen carnival campaign, was discussed. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Barnard. Fellowship of Marriage Group A short service in Holy Trinity Church conducted by Canon A. F. Hall, at which 11 members were admitted, preceded the monthly meeting of the Fellowship of Marriage Group, held at “The Vicarage,” Cobden street, on Tuesday afternoon. The chair was taken by Mrs. It. C. Tuke, Five new members, Mesdames E. T. Doddrell, L. G. Woodward, T. Leslie, F. Tolerton and K. Geary, were enrolled. A most interesting talk on Poland, illustrated by maps, was given by Mr. G. Burns, who also touched on the territorial changes in Europe since 1914. A hearty vole of thanks was passed to the speaker, on the motion of Mrs. I. D. Bramwell. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Dow, J. Trafford, D. Hall-Crease and ,1. O. Musgrave. Mothers’ Union Preceded as usual by a short service in the church at which Canon A. F. Hail admitted two members, the monthly meeting of the Holy Trinity branch of the Mothers’ Union was held in the Parish Hall, Derby street, on Tuesday afternoon The president, Mrs. A. F. Hall, Axtended a welcome to members and also the following visitors: Mesdames Beil, D. Lee. McCormick, S. Trowel! and E. Lee. Mrs. Hall introduced the speaker. Miss Creed Meredith, principal of the Narowal Mtedlon School, Dunjab, India, who gave an interesting talk on the organisation of an. Indian branch of the Mothers’ Union, and also touched on incidents in. the school life of Indian girls. Many questions in regard to the habits, clothing and food of the women, in the Punjab were asked by members and answered by Miss Meredith, to whom a warm vote of thanks was accorded, on the motion of Mrs. H. Gilmer. Regret was voiced at the absence of several members who were sick, and hopes were expressed for their speedy recovery. It. was announed that the monthly meetings in future would commence at 2.30 p.m., instead of 2.45 p.m. Afternoon tea was served under the direction of Mesdames Walworth and A. J. Sellman, assisted by willing helpers, to an attendance of approximately 50 ’ members.
