CALIFORNIA POTATOES
The first shipment of Californian potatoes to come lo New Zealand for a considerable number of years was brought to Auckland by the Mariposa. The consignment, which is only a small one of about 100 tons, is being imported by individual merchants to meet the shortage due to the small New Zealand crop. As the average consumption in Auckland is about 100 tons a day, the shipment will not go far in meeting the demand. It is about 20 years since I potatoes have been brought from CaliI fornia, and the present importation was only made possible by the exceptionally high prices now ruling for New Zealand stocks. The potatoes from California are all new season’s supplies.
