B GRADE COMPETITION ST. MARY’S Y. MANGAPAPA SPIRITED CONTEST A game characterised by plenty of movement was witnessed in the B grade basketball match between St. Mary’s B 1 and Mangapapa B on Saturday, and the contest was. an interesting one throughout. Many spirited exchanges were witnessed between the centre and defence sections of each team. The shooting of the Mangapapa goalies was not up to their usual reliable standard, though their general play was superior to that of their opponents. The centres of both teams were well matched. St. Mary’s goalies displayed clever combination,' but against the close defensive play of Mangapapa in the -second session, were forced into hurried shots which frequently went astray. Miss J. Scott was outstanding in Mangapapa’s defence section and saved with brilliant interceptions. She was ably supported by Misses E. Priestly and J. Elliott. Misses B. Parker and M. Hepburn in the centre third, and Miss Colbert : n the defence section, figured with credit in most of St. Marys’ successful movements. The Mangapapa centres, led by Miss T. Sim, were slightly subdued as a combination, their best efforts being displayed in individual play. The same may be said of their opponents, who were restricted to solo work. St. Mary’s B 1 v. Kaili In their second game of the afternoon St. Mary’s B defeated Kaili by a margin of two goals after a very hard game. Combination was not too good in the Kaiti team, and there was a tendency to indulge in long misdirected passes. I'i- the Kaiti defence third Miss Joan Stevenson played a splendid game and single-handed repeatedly diverted play from the circle area by jumping and clever intercepting. St. Mary’s showed more cohesion than in their previous game. The goalies, however, did not shoot with confidence and gave their supporters many anxious moments. . Caledonian v. Cash Stores Played on the grass court, the game between Caledonian and Cash Stores was treated in the friendliest spirit‘by both teams. Play generally was very even, though inclined to be ragged. Occasional flashes of brilliance were shown. Towards the middle of the second half the piny became haphazard and the ball was thrown wildly from one third to another.
