CRICKET MATCHES BARRED
BOROUGH RESERVES REFUSAL TO PAY ACCOUNT i STAND TAKEN BY COUNCIL The playing of cricket matches on Borough Council reserves in Gisborne is barred until the Poverty Bay Cricket Association pays an account due to the council. This attitude was adopted by the council at its meeting last night, when it was reported that the Cricket Association had decided to refuse to pay an account, of £lO for the preparation of wickets on the Childers Road Reserve last season. Recently the association asked the council to cancel the account, claiming that the wickets prepared by the council on the reserve were unplayable and they were used for only a short period during the season on that account. The council, however, maintained that it had done the work required by the association, which was therefore liable for the payment of the amount decided upon, namely, £lO. Association’s Stand Reporting to the council meeting last night, the town clerk, Mr. W. M. frrk • stated h?t re had interviewed Mr. J, W. Blathwayt on the matter, and Mr. Blathwayt had said that the association refused to meet the account. “I do not suggest that "we take legal proceedings to collect the amount,” said the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., “but I think we should not allow them to play on any of our reserves until the account is settled or arrangements made for a settlement.” The council concuiTed with that view, and passed a resolution accordingly.
