COAST RAINFALL

HEAVIEST AT HICKS BAY RETURNS FOR AUGUST The rainfall experienced on the East Coast between Gisborne and Cape Runaway during August was much heavier in the Hicks Bay area than in other parts of the district. A total of 8.49 in. of rain fell at Matarau, Hicks Bay, compared with 5.92 in. at Wairoro, Tikitiki, 4.33 in. at Ruangarchu, inland from Tokomaru Bay, 3.97 in. at Hautunoa, Tokomaru Bay, 3.77 in. at Rflkuhanga, Cape Runaway, and 1.50 in. at Gisborne. Matarau’s tally of 8.49 in. was spread over no less than 22 rain days, whereas in August, 1938, there were 10 wet days with a total of 17.34 in. Since January 1 the station has recorded 42.90 in., as against 106.19 in. for the first eight months of 1938. Nine wet days contributed Tildtiki’s aggregate of 5.92 in. and the total for the year to date at that place is 41,49 in., compared with 95.83 in. for he same period last year. Hautanoa returned a tally of 3.97 in. for 14 wet days, against 13.42 in. for 17 wet days last year, and the aggregate for the eight months ended August 31 was 3G.34in., compared with 35.96 in. in the 1938 period. Cape Runaway did not share much of the heavy rain experienced at the neighbouring station, Matarau. Its ally of 3.77 in. was spread over 18 rain days, with the heaviest fall of 75in. on August 17.
