DENIAL IN BERLIN
WORK OF SUBMARINE SUGGESTION OF MINE (Reed. Sept. 5, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 4. A message from Berlin states that Lhe German radio announcer denied that a German submarine had sunk the Athenia and said that it would be “against strict orders.” It was asserted that it was more likely that the liner had struck a mine. The London representative of the Associated Press of America says that in response to the German denial of responsibility, the Ministry of Information announced that there were no mines where the Athenia was sunk. PROCEEDING -TO GALWAY The British Admiralty announced last night that 430 survivors of the Athenia, were proceeding to Galway on the Nelson. They were expected to reach Galway this morning. . It is not known how many deaths were caused by the explosion which sank the Athenia, but earlier reports indicated that all who survived the explosion were able to leave the ship safely.
