Mr. S. Ilei returned to Wellington yesterday after visiting relatives in Te Kahn and Gisborne. Mr. W. Thomas, M.A., at present acting-headmaster of the Levin District High School, has been appointed principal of the newly-established Horowhenua College. Levin Mr. A. E. B. Goode, chief inspector in Australia for tjhe Union Bank, to-day paid a short visit to Gisborne. Mr. Gopde is on his return from England, having arrived ai Auckland by the Mariposa last week. The relieving stipendiary magistrate, Mr. J. 11. Luxford, is making th c monthly visit to tho Bay of Plenty. A sitting of thc court was held in Opotiki to-day, and sit Lags are to bo held in Whakatanc, Te Puke and Tauranga on Wednesday, Thursday and 'Friday respectively. Next week Mr. Luxford will spend three days visiting the East Coast for the usual sittings. Mr. R. J. W. Preston has retired from the Cook County Council’s office staff after six years. Prior to his departure, Mr. Preston was met by members of the staff, and on their behalf the county clerk, Mr. F. T. Robinson, presented him with a wristlet watch suitably inscribed, at the samy time paying a tribute to Mr. Preston’s faithful service to thc county and wishing him success in the future. Other members of the staff also spoke, regretting that Mr. Preston was severing his association with the council.
