OLD-TIME CRICKETER

AUSTRALIAN PLAYER EIGHTY-FIRST BIRTHDAY The sole survivor of the first cricket test match played between Australia and England, and of the first Australian representative team to four England, Mr. T. W. Garrett, celebrated' his eighty-first birthday in Sydney recently. Mr. Garrett, who is hale and hearty, still attends his office in the city daily. “I am looking forward to another cricket season in the near future — but not as a player,” he stated. Mr. Garrett y/as one of the youngest players ever to appear for Australia, being only 18 years when the first test match was played against J. Lillywhite’s team in Melbourne. He was a fine medium-paced offbreak bowler, and in the first test match, which Australia won by 45 runs, his figures were two wickets for 31 runs. On the 1878 tour of England with D. W. Gregory’s team he captured 146 wickets at an average cost of 6.97 runs. He also toured •England in 1882 and 1886, and he played in 19 test matches.
