TROUT LIBERATION
TE REINGA STREAM DAMAGE BY POACHERS (Humid Correspondent.) Mr. H. Frame, Government ranger of the Rotorua Acclimatisation District, has been liberating rainbow trout fry in the Ruakituri River. It is understood that between 100,000 and 120,000 young fish have been liberated to date, and another large consignment is expected within the next few weeks. Natural stocking appears to be successful this season as good numbers of young fry were seen yesterday in one of the spawning streams below the Papuni area. Mr. W, Bruce, Papuni, has also raised several thousand young fish, which will be liberated in the East Coast area in about a week. Unfortunately there 'is ample evidence to show that poachers have frequently and regularly taken fish from the spawning streams this season in Tc Rcinga district, and marauders do not seem to have been satisfied with a meal or two but have taken every fish they can. There is good reason to believe that the thieves walk down the centre of one bed destroying most of the eggs in the redds, and unfortunately many of the fish are taken before the reproduction process has begun.
