HAAPU ROSE BOWL

WAITUHI’S SURPRISE WIN I-lINENUI OFF COLOUR Waituhi .... 1 goal Hinenui 0 The surprise of hockey in Gisborne on Saturday was the defeat of Hinenui by Waituhi by one goal to nil in the Haapu Rose Bowl series lor Maori women’s teams. This was Hinenui’s first defeat of the season. Hinenui were well off form, and the only ones who played anywhere near their usual standard were Mrs. Tangihau, right wing, and Miss Mary Brown, half. The others, particularly the forwards, made many mistakes, even to spoiling several movements that should have ended in scores. Waituhi did not play exceptionally well; in fact, their exhibition, too, was poor, but a solid defence by Mrs. Rangiwahu and Miss Haapu soved the situation for their side.' Waituhi opened their account within the first five minutes of the start, Mrs. Baker taking the ball through from half-way to score in an empty goal, after beating the defence with her speed. Waituhi had slightly the belter of the first half, and although Hinenui dominated play in the second they made too many mistakes in the circle to score.
