WOMEN'S HOCKEY MATCH CANTERBURY CHAMPIONS DEFEAT OF EASTERN FIRST IN FIVE YEARS (Per Press Association.) BLENHEIM, this day. Playing hockey ol a high order. Canterbury and Eastern Southland fought u memorable final at the Dominion tournament on Saturday, Canterbury notching a sensational victory by two goals to one. Eastern, the only team to win all matches in the sectional play, had the first goals of the tournament scored against their, by a team which in section A had been held to draws by Marlborough A and Auckland. Eastern’s defeat was the first for five years and the second in the past nine years. Overhead and ground conditions were ideal. The big crowd was tremendously excited throughout the spectacular match. The teams maintained an amazing pace, with little between them except Canterbury’s slightly superior defence and ability to finish attacks. Miss M. Sherriff scored early in the first spell, following in and netting a rebound off the goalie’s pads. Miss D. Dickey opened the second half with an equalising goal from a slashing forward rush. The deciding goal came 10 minutes from the finish, when Miss V. McNab scored. The closing stages were hectic, but Canterbury maintained their grip despite desperate challenges by the deposed champions. The teams were;— Canterbury.—P. Blackler, B. Watkins, M. Green, J. Fraser, S. Aldridge. B. Riddell, M. Turner, D. Moses, V. McNab, D. Dickey, and B. Archer. Eastern. —J. Browning, A. McDonald, M. Folster, D. McDonald, A McLaren, A. Adam, M. Nicol, M. White, M. Sherriff, G. Jones, and J Mcßain. Eastern receive the Floyd Shield as runners-up. The Holden Cup was taken by Wellington, who defeated Feilding by three goals to two in a close contest.
