OLD SETTLER DIES
MR. ANTHONY DOHERTY 54 YEARS TN DISTRICT LONG PUBLIC SERVICE • The death occurred yesterday at his residence in Patuahi of one of the older settlers of the district, Mr. Anthony Doherty. He was 77 years of age, and had. been 54 years in the Gisborne district. The deceased was deeply respected, and had served the people of his area for many years as honorary secretary of the Patutahi Domain Board, the Patutahi Town Board, and the Patutahi Cemetery Board; and also as a member of the school committee in the township. Mr. Doherty was born at Meenihanid, Donegal, Ireland, and came to New Zealand as a young man by the steamer Rimutaka. He settled immediately in Poverty Bay, and after spending some years in bridge-build-ing and other contract work, he took up land at Patutahi when the Swartlimoor estate was cut up. He spent the remainder of his life in that neighbourhood, and earned the esteem of all who knew him. At the age of 37 years, he married Miss Annie Hill, member of a wellknown pioneer family, and bis family comprised two sons and live daughters. One son, Mr. Eugene Doherty, died ns the result or an accident 15 year's ago, and the surviving children are Mr. Joseph Doherty, Patutahi. Miss M. Doherty, Napier, Miss Joan Doherty, New Plymouth, Miss Rose Doherty, Sydney, and Misses Marjorie and Cecilia Doherty, Patutahi. Mrs. Doherty also survives, and with the members of her family will receive the deep sympathy of many friends. The funeral or the late Mr. Doherty will take place to-morrow, after a requiem mass in Patutahi at 9 a.m
