KING’S BROADCAST TO NATION

Resisting Doctrine That Might Is Right DELIVERING WORLD FROM BONDAGE (Elec. Tel. CopyrighL—United Press Assn.) (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 11.30 a.m. RUGBY, Sept. 3. Broadcasting to the nation this afternoon the King said: “Pur the second times in the lives of most of ns, we are at war. Over and over again we have tried to find a peaceful way out of the differences between ourselves and those who now are our enemies, but it has been in vain. “We have been forced into the conflict. . For we are called, with our allies, to meet a challenge of a principle which, if it were to prevail, would be fatal to any civilised order in flic world. it is a principle which permits a State, in the selfish pursuit of power, to disregard its treaties and its solemn pledges, which sanctions the use of force or a threat of force against the sovereignty and independence of- other j States. “Such a principle, stripped of all disguise, is surely the mere primitive doctrine that might, is right and it this principle were established throughout the world, the freedom of our own country and the whole of the British Commonwealth of Nations would lie in danger. But far more than Ihis —the peoples of Ihc world would be kept in a bondage of fear and all hopes of a settled peace and of the security of justice and liberty among the nations would be ended. This is the nilimale issue which confronts us. “ l-’or 1 lie sake of all we ourselves bold dear and of world order and peace it is unthinkable that we should refuse to meet the challenge. Jl is to this high purpose that 1 now call to my people at Home and across the seas, who will make our cause their own. We can only do right as we see right and reverently commit our cause to God. If one and all, we keep resolulely faithful 1o il and ready for whatever service or sacrifice it may demand, then with God’s help we shall prevail. May lie bless and keep us all.”
