CANNED FRUIT
NONE FROM AUSTRALIA SH IBM ENTS SUSPENDED I>A YM ENT DIFFICULTY Because of its unwillingness to sanction trade on a system of deferred payments the Australian Canned Fruit Control Board will stop shipments of canned fruit to New Zealand from the beginning of next month. As there is no alternative source of supply stocks for the summer will be particularly short. Most of the canned fruit orders for New Zealand were booked at the beginning of the year for shipment up to the end of October. As few stocks were needed in the winter, shipments were usually arranged for September and October, so that the decision will affect practically all the importations for the coming season. Present stocks are only very light. Although a fair amount of .fruit is canned in New Zealand, it is inadequate to meet all requirements. It is feared that Australian sultanas and raisins may be subjected to the same form of control.
Payment for canned fruit importations from Australia were arranged by tlie Reserve Bank on the basis of 25 per cent in the first quarter of 1940 and the remainder in the second quarter.
