TRACK AND STABLE

ON THE EASY LIST VALMINT’S CONDITION AVONDALE PROSPECTS CHANCE FOR WYNDORA By “Trenton”

As Valmint has no engagements at the Avondale meeting, W. Fergus is only giving the' chestnut gelding sufficient work to keep hi’s condition right. Since being leased by the Ellerslie trainer Valmint has been a good investment, having won £BOO within the last three months. He is a fit horse and will only need to retain his latest form in order to earn more money during the spring meetings.

Engaged at Avondale

King Musk is being kept going in view of his hurdle engagements at Avondale. The Musketoon gelding has been successful over the battens, but the field opposed to him on that occasion was very moderate. Although well seasoned, King Musk does not appear likely to reach good class as far as hurdles are concerned. t Likely Improver i Although she failed to finish in the money in her engagement at the Pakuranga meeting, Wyndora showed a lot of speed while her condition lasted. The race is likely to benefit her a good deal and she may soon make a return to the winning list. This .filly is down to contest hack sprint events at the Avondale meeting and should be worth following. Wyndora won a two-year-old event at Avondale last autumn and may repeat the performance next month. G. Holland’s Team The two-year-old gelding by Musketoon from Elope, a new arrival at Ellerslie, has been named Mimax, and his stable mate, the filly by Lord Warden from Pledge, will race as Mamasha. Both these youngsters were purchased at the Trentham yearling sales last January by, the late Mr. Max Steinberg. They are being educated by G. Holland, who has applied for a trainer’s license, and will take charge of Konneta, Fidelis, Wapaugh and Soap Box when the quartet arrive from Riccarton. Did Well Last Autumn Since returning from the Grand National meeting Agog has freshened up nicely. He gave a first-rate jumping display over hurdles last week and should run prominently the next time he races over the battens. Agog won three hurdle races on end last autumn, but he did not do so well as expected during the winter. The fall he had in the Great Northern Hurdle Race probably accounted for this to some extent. Won Last Season The Trimmer is hitting out very freely in his work at Ellerslie and looks all the better for the race he had a couple of weeks ago. This hack beat a good field, in a maiden event at Avondale last spring, but has not won. since, though several of those that he, beat on that occasion have been good winners. The Trimmer will have another chance to make amends in hack events at the Avondale spring meeting.

Micawber Again

Winning a fortune for his connections, Micawber followed up his victory in the rich Doomben Newmarket with a comfortable win in the Ascot Handicap at Ascot recently, says a Brisbane writer.

Though favourite, Micawber was the medium for a big betting plunge by the followers of Mr. Alan Cooper’s stable. IHe carried his 9.2 without effort and won as he liked.

Brisbane has proved a happy hunting ground for Mr. Cooper with Micawber. He paid only £BOO for the horse and within six weeks he won £2BOO. Micawber will be prepared for the Epsom Handicap and then to Melbourne for tlje Cantala Stakes.

Fred Shean rode a confident race on the winner, who scored from The Albatross, with Bahwing a close .third. Micawber covered the distance in 1.12 J, which is only a second outside the course record. He appeared to be hopelessly out of the race early and was leading only three horses at the half-mile post, where most of his backers would have sold their tickets for a song. Then in the next furlong and a half Micawber turned what seemed certain defeat into an amazing victory. Pulling Micawber from the rails to the outside nearing the three furlongs, Shean was eight horses wide from the fence when he made the home turn, with Arabia well in command.

Arabia stopped quickly in the centre of the field and Micawber swooped down on The Albatross, going right away on the post.
