MUNICIPAL COURTS SCHEME NOT SUPPORTED GISBORNE CLUB MEETING The question, of the formation of municipal tennis courts in Gisborne was considered at the annual meeting of the Gisborne Lawn Tennis Club, which was held in the Repertory Society’s rooms, on Wednesday evening. Various angles of the scheme were discussed and it was decided that the club would not take any active steps in support of the proposah Mr. D. E. Chnsip presided and there was a good attendance of members.

“The income and expenditure account shows a surplus of £IC 3s fid, after charging depreciation on the buildings and plant,” stated the annual report. “The income for the year has increased by £47, mainly due to greater amounts being received by way of subscriptions and profits from dances. The expenditure has decreased by approximately £2l. The building fund, comprising building society shares held by the Club, now amounts to £77 4s 6d. “In spite of the very dry summer last year the courts were in excellent condition throughout the season. This was due mainly to the conscientious work of the groundsman, Mr. D. Sheahan. “The usual handicap and championship tournaments were held and the congratulations of the club are extended to the winners of the various events. A cud for the ladies iunior singles was donated by Mr. C. L. Margoliouth the first winner being Miss N. Mitford. “The club is the present holder ol the H. B. Williams Shield, having won it from the Whataupoko Club by a narrow margin and successfully defended it against the Wairoa and Te Hapara Clubs. . “All the courts are, at present in very good order, and, subject to weather conditions, should be available for play about the middle of October. The committee has already received several new aplications for membership for the coming season, the prospects for which appear to be very bright.” . ~ In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the chairman drew attention to the large extent the club’s funds had benefited by the dances and praised the efforts of those concerned. The motion was carried. „ „ The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mr. D. E. Chrisn; vicepresidents, Messrs. C. L. Margoliouth, N. H. Bull, L. T. Burnard, M.. R. Maude and A. Shorlandj committee, Messrs. G. M. Chrisp, W. Kohn, W L. Margoliouth, R. A. Phillpotts and E Woodrow; hon. secretary and treasured, Mr. P. R. Willock. The membership subscriptions were fixed the same as for last A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. D. Sheahan for his efficient work as groundsman. The courts were excellent throughout last season and the indications were that they would be equally as good this season, if not better. . An expression of appreciation was passed to Mr. P. W. Barlow for his services as hon. auditor.
