CARNIVAL PROCESSION
NEXT WEEK’S FUNCTION THIRTY - THOU SAN D CLUB OENTENNIA L WOEK In reporting on the progress of the centennial queen carnival to last evening's meeting of the Gisborne Thirty-Thousand Club, the committee organising the campaign referred to the extensive efforts being made. It was reported that plans had been made for a carnival procession to be held in Gisborne next Friday. Floats and decorated cars would take part in the procession, in conjunction with the W.E.C.M.R. Band and the FireBrigade. On the same day as the procession the Gisborne and District Beautifying Society would hold its annual street sale, the entire proceeds of which would be devoted to the centennial funds. Offers of assistance were made to the society by members of the executive of the club. The club also agreed to assist the Rotary Club in connection with the forthcoming visit of the Blind Institute Band. A donation of £25 was made to the Centennial Council towards the purchase of a motor-truck for the west end development work, part of the marine drive scheme. A further £SO, raised by subscription, was handed to the council for the same purpose. Captain Cook’s Landing:
An inquiry was received from the Victoria League with regard to the anniversary of the landing of Captain Cook at Poverty Bay. It was decided to reply that the club would not be holding Captain Cook celebrations in October this year in view of the celebrations on a large scale in October, 1940. Mr. O. G. Thornton, district engineer, Gisborne, wrote giving the club permission to proceed with its tree planting scheme on the East Coast main highway. On behalf of Mr. S. IP. Spiller, Napier, who recently (visited Gisborne, Mr. Morse congratulated the club on the marked progress that had been made with the Waikanae beach development scheme.
The club decided to arrange a beach carnival early in the new year to raise funds to assist the W.E.C.M.R. Band to attend the New Zealand centennial band contests. The entertainment committee was instructed to put in hand arrangements for the celebration of Guy Fnwke’s night on November 4. the divergence from the usual date being made as November 5 falls on a Sunday.
The inter-house sports sub-com-mittee was requested to call a meeting of all interested in the sports for September 7, to arrange details for the proposed fixture. Executive Member Resigns
A leter was received from Mr. H. R. Heiford, tendering his resignation from the executive owing to pressure of business. His resignation was received with regret, several members of the executive paying tribute to the valuable work done by Mr. Heiford Those present at the meeting were Messrs. James Christo, chairman, R. Morse, J. H. Hall, W. Mellwaine, V. Venables, W. M. Jenkins, I. J. Quigley, W. Keith, H. L. Primrose, T. A. N. Johnston, 'B. S. Bree, A. J. Cox, K. R. Waite, and W. Kohn, secretary.
