DRIVEN ALONG BEACH

STRANDED PORT BOWEN HEAVY CABLE.BREAKS (Per Press Association.) WANGANUI,. this day. During the high spring tide last night the stranded liner Port Bowen moved fully half her length in a southerly direction along the coast. The heavy steel cable which had been run out well up the beach in a northerly direction snapped yesterday under the great strain. In the meantime there is nothing to prevent the steamer moving still further south until the spring tides recede.

Up till Saturday last 16,000 packages, including carcases of meat, had been unloaded.

Because the Port Bowen has moved away from the extensive sand bank which has been formed between the jF'ceamer and the shore, there is every chance of the vessel being carried further toward the shore, making the task of refloating much more difficul:.
