Definite proposals for cancer con;rol and administration in New South Wales and plans for the development of a campaign against tuberculosis, will be submitted to the New South Wales Government within the next few weeks by the Hon. H. Fitzsimmons, Minister of Health in the State Cabinet, who passed through Auckland on his return from an extensive official visit to Great Britain, Europe and the United'States. Mr. Fitzsimmons was absent from Australia when Mr. Alexander Mair was elevated to the Premiership of New South Wales toy a dramatic series of events which culminated on August 3 with the defeat of the Stevens Government. However, said Mr. Fitzsimmons, he had received and accepted an invitation to retain the portfolio of health and he would be sworn in shortly after his arrival at Sydney.
Accompanied toy Mr. Cobden Parks, chief Government architect, who will return shortly, Mr. Fitzsimons travelled in Great Britain, Scandinavia, Germany, Italy, France and the United States studying hospital developments. design equipment and administration. His specific task was to look into cancer and tuberculosis control.
Speaking broadly, said Mr. Fitzsimons, the general hospitals in New South Wales compared quite favourably in design and equipment with those he had seen abroad. Specialised hospitals, however, were not comparable with those in Great Britain, Scandinavia, Switzerland, and the United States. In Australia, for instance, there was nothing like the Institute of Cancer, Paris, or the. Manchester Cancer Institute.
