CRUISES CANCELLED
NEW YORK EXCURSIONS TRANSPORT FROM EUROPE (Reed. Sept. 1, 9 a.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 31. Most of the Labour Day cruises have been cancelled, While British and French shipping lines have notified prospective passengers for the West Indies that they will need passports and visas from now on. The United States liner Washington. which is due to-day from Europe will be supplied with 500 cots and extra lifeboats. She will sail on Saturday to pick up 1500 from the thousands of Americans stranded in Britain and France.
In the meantime the Furness Line’s steamer Queen of Bermuda has been withdrawn from the island run and will remain here awaiting orders to proceed to England, where she would become a troop transport in the event of war. Both ships were originally scheduled to make week-end holiday cruises, as was also the Georgia, whose trip to Halifax has been cancelled.
