VISIT TO BERLIN PARLEY WITH HITLER INSISTENCE ON EQUALITY GERMAN MOVE RESENTED ARMY IN SLOVAKIA (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.J
(Reed. Sept. 1, 11 am.) LONDON, August 31
Mr. Vernon Bartlett, writing in the News-Chronicle, says that Poland rejected Herr Hitler’s proposal that Polish envoys should go to Berlin to negotiate a settlement of the German claims against Poland, after which, according to ‘Mr. Bartlett Herr Hitler said he would be ready to discuss a geheral settlement with Britain.
He adds that Britain pointed out to Her r Hitler that Polish-German equality could only obtain if the discussions occurred on neutral ground.
The Poles themselves, adds Mr. Bartlett, are likely to go further by insisting that there can be no equality until the German troops are withdrawn from Slovakia.
Aggravated Overnight
Official circles in Berlin give the impression that the situation has become aggravated overnight.
There is growing nervousness on the part of citizens, who are asking when the war of nerves will end. .Moveable patients are being evacuated from hospitals in ambulances, but at present there is no indication of a general evacuation.
/It is not considered likely that Herr Hitler’s reply will reach London to-day.
Newspaper editorials continue calm, taking the view that while negotiations are proceeding, war may be averted.
The Times says the absolutely binding nature of the French and British pledge to Poland does notin any way preclude satisfaction being given on everything in the German case which either equal negotiation or impartial arbitration accepts as reasonable.
