CUSTOMS REVENUE GISBORNE COLLECTIONS RETURNS FOR AUGUST IMPORT DUES WELL AHEAD

Import dues paid at Gisborne for August were substantially greater than those of the corresponding month of last year, the margin _in favour of the month just closed being nearly £I4OO. Beer excise payments, too, showed a marked 1 increase, due in part at least to the imposition of an additional fid per gallon on the tax. Sales tax receipts fell away slightly, by comparison with last August; on the other band. For the eight months of 1939 now completed, the collections made through the Gisborne office of the Customs Department have totalled £62,906, as against £58,679 for the first eight months of 1938. The average increase per month has been approximately £SOO, all three of the principal avenues- of taxation showing improvement in some degree. Revenue for August was divided as shown in the following tabulation, in which the comparative figures for 1938 are also given:—
