BASKETBALL FORM

COMPETITION PLAY WEr7L-MATCHED TEAMS Two .well-matched teams. Woolworths and 1H.5.0.G. A2, met in the only A grade basketball match played on the Victoria Domain on Saturday. Passing of the short, crisp variety and clever intercepting was shown by both sets of defenders. The combination was not very close in Woolworths' centre third, and it was in this section that 1f.5.0.G. had a decided advantage. Though playing throughout with only eighj players, H.S.O.G. got an equal share of the ball, but could not seem to strike form at goaling. Miss Ailsa Pilcher was outstanding in Old Girls’ centre third. Misses E. Pert, M. Crawford and S. Lightfoot were the best, of the others. Mrs. B. Foster made hardly a mistake in Woolworths’ forward third, her shooting being very accurate. Miss Hodgson shone on defence and saved with skilful interceptions. Mangapapa li v. Y.M.C.A. 1 Mangapapa B gave a clever display in all departments and showed strong combination and sound positional play. The passing in the centre and goal thirds was executed with crispness and quickness, while the defence intercepted well. The goals, Misses E. Stevens, O. Masemann and R. Bignall, combined perfectly and converted well with careful throws. Y.M.C.A. A’s play was ragged at times, the team relying mainly on individual efforts.

Occasionally Y.M.C.A. displayed some combination, but it invariably broke down before the close attentions of the Mangapapa players. Misses J. Scott and J. Elliott were outstanding in Mangapapa’s defence third, while Misses T. Sim and E. Scholium dominated the centre third. Y.M.C.A. 2 v. Caledonian Y.M.C.A. 2 put up a very good exhibition against Caledonian and on tire run of tile play were slightly the better team. This team shows more cohesion than Y.M.C.A. 1, and has shown a great improvement in positional play.
