OVERSEAS TRADE
FIGURES FOR JULY
EXPORTS £226,00 LOWER ADVERSE BALANCE £905,000 (Special to the Herald.) WELLINGTON, this day. A decrease of £226,000 in the value of exports during July, compared with the level in the corresponding month last year, is shown by the preliminary figures of overseas trade issued by the Customs Department yesterday. The. valuation for the month, in New Zealand currency, was £3,557.000 compared with £3,783,000 in July last year and £4,824,000 for the same month in 1937. The imports at £4,462,000 were £149,000 lower in value than last year, and £381,000 below the level of July, 1937.
Imports exceeded exports in value for the month by £905,000, compared with £828,000 last year. Though July is normally a month of slack export trade, with seasonal imports beginning to increase, the present is the largest visible adverse commodity balance for any July in the past seven years. Import restriction has not prevented that position from arising. The figures for July in the past years are:—
For the first seven months of the calendar year exports were £751,000 lower than for the corresponding period last year. In the same period imports increased by £929,000. The visible favourable commodity balance has. fallen by £1,680,000 from £9,370,000 to £7,690,000. A comparison of the seven months ended July in the past seven years is as follows:
There were no exports of specie during July. Imports were valued at £165. For the seven months ended July exports were valued at £2795 and imports at £8196.
