A fire which occurred’ at Garden Island naval dockyard to-day did minor damage to the large cruiser Australia, which was being reconditioned and (strengthened. The outbreak began when an oilfuel pipe toursit, andi set fire to a large quantity of pitch on the wharf. Flames and dense smoke shot up 50ft., scorched t)hc cruiser, and! destroyed a whaleboat aboard.

The fire was soon under control
