Compensations
Sir, —Come to think of it, the Government has kept me from getting all dirty top-dressing. You see, they used' quite a bit of my funds to outbid me for labour. They put up the price of super and saved me the cost and also the dirtiness by taking away my' labour. I was too busy doing other things, and had no time to spread it. if I had had the labour and distributed the super, it would have meant having to get up early later on to truck the fat lambs, and this in turn would have helped to wear out the railway. So that was another saving. Then there would have been more woolpacks to buy and more freight to pay. It costs a lot. too. for the extra shearing, and the Government does not like shearers working long hours, ;o everything just fits in nicely.
Then, if I had the help, there would have been swedes, hay and ensilage for the winter, and, you know, it can he pretty wet and miserable feeding these out. Thus another nasty job has Li en avoided by tire Government's thoughtfulness. Another thing, if the Government had let me get a man it would have meant my going out. working with him, but now I can stay inside more, and because I do not make 100 big an income I do not have so much tax to pay. Then if I take things • -..ice and quietly the fern, will be able to grow to stop erosion, and the Government is strong on erosion. Anyway, very soon I shall be old enough for the social security, and when I sit in the plane “like a millionaire” I shall be able, maybe, to point out an abandoned farm and laugh and
say, “I once belonged to that place, but, thank goodness, it does not own me now.” That abandoned railway through it saved me from belonging to it. STUNG.
