CAMPS ISOLATED
SOUTHERN MAIN TRUNK RAIN CAUSES DAMAGE Work on the South Island Main Trunk railway will be delayed at several points because of ‘damage caused by the heavy week-end rainfall. This was ‘the most severe fall since the construction was reopened in 193 G, and it caused slips across the permanent way and access roads, and also .in several places where excavation is being carried out. None of the damage its serious, and it is expected that most of the slips will be cleared away w.Vnm the next lew days. A slip occurred in the Hawkswood Cutting, but it is not extensive, and the track was cleared for the passage of trains on Tuesday. More serious is a large slip in a rock cutting .to the west of the Conway road bridge. The Taratuhi road camp has been isolated by slips on both of the access roads. Another camp at the north end of the Amuri Bluff tunnel also was isolated by the blockage of the coast road south of Oaro. From Oaro up to the Kahautara River there have been slips on the railway where excavation work is in progress. ■Slips over the portals of some of .lie tunnels have made it necessary temporarily to suspend tunnelling operations
