WAIHI INDUSTRY REVIVED EFFECT OF HOTEL BOYCOTT The miners’ decision to refrain from patronising the hotels until the price of beer is reduced has had a marked effect on the hotel bar trade in Waihi. The bars have been practically deserted. Another result of the miners’ boycott has been the revival of the "home brew” industry, which flourished during the no-license era. The immediate and big demand for ingredients to brew beer caught some of the Waihi storekeepers unprepared and stocks of malt extract in one store were depleted in less than 24 hours.
