■Play in the Poverty Bay Goif Club’s annual open tournament opened at the A'w'apuni links this morning, when the first qualifying round of the open championship was played. Conditions were good, despite damp greens causing some short putting.
.Ninety players drove ofT in the qualifying round this morning, the field including players front Auckland, Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, 'Wairoa, ‘and the ®ast Coast. The second qualifying round is toeing played this 'afternoon, and match play iwill commence to-morrow.
Mr. G. B. Menzies, secretary of the North Island Licensed Victuallers’ Golf Association, • visited Gisborne during the week-end to discuss with the executive of the Poverty Bay Golf Club arrangements for -the annual tournament of his association which is to be held on the Awapuni links on October 9, 10 and 11.
