HARBOUR BOARD MEETS NOVEMBER CONFERENCE REPORTS ON MAINTENANCE Yesterday’s meeting of the Gisiboiue Harbour Board occupied less than an hour, the business being confined to a study of reports and discussion of several small items. The only matter of importance touched upon was the dredging programme in the inner harbour, an indication being given that by the end of.the year, at latest, continuous dredging would be suspended, and the dredge A.C. put on a maintenance footing.

Those present were Messrs. A. J. Nicol, chairman, T. Corson, I. J. Quigley, J. J. Macdonald, J. B. Broadhurst, H. J. F. Tomblesbn, R. D. Dymock, R. Murray, J. E. Benson, W. T. Veitch, M. T. Trafford, and W. -G. Sherratt. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs. C. H. Williams and W. R. Clark. Notice was received from the Harbours’ Association of the biennial conference, to be held in Wellington during the last week in. November On the motion of Mr. J. E. Benson, it was decided that the board should be represented at the conference by two delegates, ’

The acting-secretary manager, Mr. R. R. Baldrey, reported that the dredge A.C., durin 2 the four weeks ended, August 22, had lifted and deposited 10,780 tons of spoil from the ship channel and harbour pool. Delays in dredging, owing to bad weather, totalled 36| hours. Repairs had been made to the level-cut sand grabs on the dredge, which had been re-assembled and were now working satisfactorily. The report added that the dredge would have to go on the slip on September 4 for annual overhaul. i The report, which also dealt, with the general work of the maintenance staff, was adopted. The harbourmaster, Captain R. McKenzie Smart, reported on the condition of the channel, and the use of the port by shipping during the past month. The navigable depth in the channel was 14ft with zero on the guage. Ships working the port for the month totalled 25, with a gross tonnage of 29,576. The report was adopted.
