WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
TIKIWHATA
Mrs. Brown, president of the Tildwhrita . Institute , welcomed visitors from Gisborne, Mrs. A. Wright, Mrs. Wicksteed arid Miss J. Sherratt. Mrs. Wright and Mrs. Wicksteed delivered addresses on the institute movement, while Miss Sherratt talked of her experiences during her recent holiday in Hollywood, California.
Afternoon .tea , was served by the hostesses, Mesdam-es Arriore and Callahan.
TAKITIMU
There wris a good attendance at the. August meeting of the .Takatimu Institute which .was held in .the Materoa Hall. The president, Mrs. Rangiuia, welcomed' the visitors.
Mrs. Wright and Mrs. , Wicksteed addressed the meeting. Mrs. Wicksteed was made the recipient of a Maori gift from the iristitute. The competitions resulted:—Pot of marmalade,—Mrs. Sherratt, 1; Mrs. Pitt, 2; Mrs. McLeod, 3. Worked apron.—Mrs. Cassin, 1; Mrs. Nasmith, 2; 'Mrs. Pitt, 3.
WIGAN
The August meeting marked the fourth .birthday of the Wigan institute and there was a good attendance of members. Most' cf the afternoon was spent entertaining guests from the Whangara and Tolaga Bay institutes. Dainty sprays and posies were presented by the visitors. Mrs. Bullard and Miss Moore gave musical items, for which they were thanked. After the serving of afternoon tea the beautiful birthday cake made .by Miss Fletcher was cut and dispensed. Competitions for August resulted as follow:—Best decorated sponge: Mrs. Reeves, 1; Miss M. Binnie, 2. Best sponge: iMrs. fitting, 1; Mrs. Warburton, 2. Article from Iyd of linen: Mrs. Warburton, 1. Best bloom: Mrs. McNeil, 1; Miss J. Bartram, 2; Miss E. Reeves, 3.
NGATAPA
An interesting afternoon was spent at the August meeting of the Ngatapa Institute when Mrs. Wicksteed and Mrs. Wright, president and secretary Respectively of the Poverty Bay federation paid a visit. Mrs. Randall Sherratt was also present, as a visitor. Mrs. Humphries, the president extended a welcome to the visitors, presenting both Mesdames Wright and Wicksteed with bouquets of spring flowers. Mrs. Turnbull, a foundation member who has attended all but two meetings of the institute also received a Victorian posy. Mrs. Wright read the report of the Dominion executive and both she and Mrs. Wicksteed gave instructive addresses on the aims and objects !of the movement. The competitions resulted: Bowl of Spring Bulbs: Mrs. H. M. White, 1; Mrs. F. Briant, 2; Miss L. Williams, 3. Best Sponge Cake, iced and filled: Miss Campbell and Miss Muir, equal, 1; Mrs. Humphreys, 3; Mrs. Lennie, 4. Mrs. Wright won a word guessing competition. Members exchanged plants which they had brought.
Mrs. Williams moved a hearty vote of thanks to both speakers which was carried by acclamation.
WAIMATA VALLEY
The monthly meeting of the Waimata Valley Institute was held on August 14 in order to coincide with the visits of Mrs. R. I-I. Wicksteed and Mrs. W. A. Wright, president and secretary respectively of the Poverty Bay Federation.. Mrs. J. Gillgren presided. It was decided to make a donation of 10s towards the New Zealand delegation to the peace congress in October.
Mrs. Wright dealt with the annua! report of the Dominion conference, and explained several points. Mrs. Wicksteed dealt more with the social side of the movement and illustrated her talk with a character sketch.
On the motion of Mrs. J. Gillgren seconded by Mrs. J. C. Mazengarb members passed a hearty vote of thanks to the visitors, who were accorded musical honours.
The competitions were judged by Mesdames Wickstecd and Wright, who made the awards as follows: Best laundered child’s frock. —Mrs. W. Barton, 1; Miss D. Jones, 2; Mrs. P. Quinn, 13. Most nutritious 'child’s lunch: Mrs. X C. Mazengarb, 1; Mrs. Gillgren, 2. A sales- table in aid of federation lunds resulted in 10s being handed to Mrs. Wright. OPOUTAMA The seventh ’birthday of the Opoutama institute was celebrated in the hall on August 16. The president, Mrs. Foster, welcomed the visitors, who included members of the Kopuawhara institute, the surrounding district and Sister .May Gardiner, from Nuhaka. The Opoutama school children, conducted by the headmaster, Mr. Short, gave very enjoyable items. Competitions resulted as follow: Clothes pegging: -Mrs. Foster, 1; Mrs. J. Macrae, 2. Telegram: Mrs. Doyle, 1. Guessing: Mrs. A. Jcbson, 1; Mrs. Sunderland, 2. Mystery parcel: (Mrs. E. Murray. Misses J. and G. (Macrae and J. Bro'wn entertained the audience with a song.
Sister May Gardiner gave an interesting talk on institute work. She complimented the Opoutama institute on its progress and unity. A man’s pullover donated by Mrs. Jim Ormond whs won by Mrs. R. Rarere, and 'a pair of men’s socks knitted Iby Mr. Roy Madden was won toy himself. Sister May Gardiner and Mrs. White were the recipients of pretty sprays and buttonholes.
. The competitions resulted:—(Best shopping bag made from sugar bag: Mrs. W. Dailey, 1; iMrs. J. Ormond, 2 and 3. Floating bowl: Mrs. W. Dailey, 1; IMrs. Foster, 2; Mrs. Mead, 3. One -new member was enrolled. On (he afternoon lea table pride of place was -given to the cake made toy Mrs. Hammond. Mrs. Foster cut the cake. Tea hostesses for the afternoon were all memlbers of the institute.
RUATORIA
At a meeting of the Ruatoria Women’s Institute, Mrs. R. H. Wicksteed reported on her visit to institutes in the Poverty Bay federation’s area.
Miss Brown demonstrated cold morning exercises, in which members took part. Articles for thg community chest were reported to be coming in freely. < The hostesses served an enjoyable tea.
WHATATUTU
. The August meeting .of the Whatatutu , Women's . Institute . was held at Mrs. Grey’s home, being presided over., by the . president, Miss Howard. The attendance was fair.
. The programme for the annual flower-show to be held in the Whatatutu Hall on October 27, whs Compiled.
An instructive. “Garden Talk,” given by Miss Howard, was much appreciated. Competitions resulted: —Sugar . Bag Apron.—Mrs. Shaw, 1. Bowl of Primroses. —Miss Grey, 1. Marmalade. —Mrs. Grey, 1: Mrs. Shaw, and Mrs. McLeod, 2. The amusement was exchange of books. Tlie hostesses were Mesdames Grey and W. Tait. The September meeting will be held at Mrs. Duncan Campbell’s home.
MOTU-MOTUHORA
There was an average attendance at the August meeting of the MotuMotuhora Institute. The meeting was held in the morning to enable members to meet Mrs. Wicksteed, president of the Poverty Bay Federation. Mrs. A. E. Legge presided. Final arrangements were made for the husbands’ evening to be held on August 29. An interesting golden thread paper on Modern Women was read by Mrs. Legge, her choice being the New Zealand authoress, Miss Rosemary Rees.
After lunch, Mrs. Wicksteed gave an interesting talk on institute work. A vote of thanks was passed to the sneaker, Mrs. Legge presenting Mrs. Wicksteed with a spray of pansies, the institute emblem.
The competition. Cream Puffs resulted.—Mrs. W. Stewart. 1: Mrs. F. Fisher. 2. Hostesses for luncheon were Mrs. F. Fisher and Miss > M. Fisher.
WHAKAKI
The Whakaki branch of the Women’s Institute held their August meeting on Wednesday last, in the Whakaki dining hall. Members bade farewell to Nurse Grant, district rurse. who leaves shortly for Christchurch.
Two new members were installed, Mrs. J. Hook and Miss Bates. A letter from Mr. Dickinson on “Poultry Keeping” was read to an interested audience. Th« competitions resulted ns follows:—Prettiest apron from a flour bag; Mrs. P. Smith, 1; Mrs. Turi Walker, 2; Mrs. S. Kahukura, 3. Pot of Marmalade: Mrs. A. H. Harrison. 1; Mrs. F. Pinfold, 2; Mrs. G. D. Taylor. 3. Best Bloom: Mrs. A. H. Harrison and Mrs. G. D. Taylor, equal. Concert items were presented by the pupils of the Whakaki Native School. Several action songs and part plays concluded with the popular farewell song. Master P. Solomon, a pupil, on behalf of the school children, farewollod Nurse Gram. Mrs. Pinfold, president of the institute presented Nurse- Grant with a well filled envelope and referred to the district’s regret in losing her. At tlie same time she welcomed Nurse Watson. Nurse Grant suitably replied. Similar sentiments were expressed by Mrs. J. M. Taylor.
Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. W. Walker and P. Riki. , ... ... •
