Boxer’s Return Maurice McHugh, who won the l amateur heavyweight boxing championship in Gisborne last September, has arrived back, in New Zealand after having'spent sik months abroad. Before leaving for England McHugh was a prominent member of the Marist Football Club in Auckland, but in future h e will make his residence in Wellington and it is fully expected that he will defend his title in Invercargill early next month.
Wrestlers’ Training Room The training rooms for amateur wrestlers, which are open on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in Bright street, are being well attended and it is fully expected that a marked improvement will be shown by the wrestlers' in their next bouts.
Road Race
The annual road cycle race from Palmerston North to Petone, of 100 miles, will take place on November 4 and will carry with it the North Island road championship
, Keen Rugby Referee Mr. L. R. (Les.) Stichbury has been a prominent member of the Poverty Bay Rugby Referees’ Association now for a number of years, and has always taken a keen interest in the - many debates at the weekly meetings. He was on the appointment committee for several
years, but was compelled to resign during this year on account of the pressure of his work. He played, for many clubs during his active days and will probably be out again next Saturday when the old timers’ match will take place in aid of the sports queen. On the permanent staff of the Defence Department, he has his hands full at the present time with the many recruits who have recently joined. He was a member Of the New Zealand contingent to the coronation of King George VI.
New Arrival
One of the latest wrestlers to arrive in New Zealand is the American, Rube Wright, who has been in Australia for some time and has had a successful season. This is Wright’s first visit to these shores. In England ;he was defeated by Earl Me-Cr-eady in a bout in the Athletic Hall, this being the first wrestling bout to take place in that famous hall since Gama met Stainslaus Zbyszko, over 30 years ago.

Wright has come across from Australia in exchange for Rollend Kirchmeyer, who recently met McCready in Gisborne.
Wrestler 111 The heavyweight wrestler C. Baigent, who met Archie Campbell recently, has been compelled to give the game up for this season on account of ill health. *'*s.* Congratulations To the members of the Gisborne High School fifteen and Mr. Percy Edmondson, their coach, “Four Forty” offers his congratulations on their win over the Sacred Heart College recently. It was one of the finest .matches seen on the Oval for a long time. High School during the season seldom were able to field,their full team, otherwise they would probably have finished further up the championship ladder.
Good Football Record
When Carterton scored a one point victory over Greytown recently they won the 1939 Wairarapa Rugby championship. This is the twentyfirst occasion since 1900 that they have won the championship.
Captain of the Referees Together with Messrs. K. R. Waite and W. J. Wilkie, Mr. Vern Norman is a member •of the committee of the Poverty Bay Referees’ Association responsible for making the appointments for club matches every week in GisbOrne
The task is not iso easy as it appears to the general public as the committee have to ensure that one club does not get the same referee > too often and also that he is not appointed to the same ground too often in succession.
Mr. Norman was the captain of the referees’ ' team who were -successful in retaining .the Runfairley Shield in a strong challenge of the Fire-Bri-gade-Band team recently. In the summer months, he plays cricket for the Marist senior B team of which he is the captain. He is a slow bo.wler who flights the ball deceptively and last season had a good bowling average.
Lovelock’s Record Goes Jack Lovelock’s British record for two miles went by the board the other day, when J. Emery, crack English long-distance . runner, covered the distance in 9min 3.4 sec. Lovelock’s figures were 9min 3.Bsec, made just before the Olympic Games in 1930. p. D. Ward, well known: to members of the New Zealand Empire Games team in Sydney, was second to Emery, 4yds away. * * • • Former Gisboraeite In a recent boxing match in Blenheim, Val Borcovsky defeated Roderick. who is a younger brother of Paddy, who will be .remembered as one of the leading amateurs in Gisborne when Joe Franklin and Alex Robertson were fighting here.
