SOUTH ISLANDERS’ BID
TAIRAWHITI DEFENDERS JU NIOR TITLE I ’LAY - OFF Rivalling in interest the Rugby football fixtures in the main centres to-day, the challenge match played on the Gisborne Oval for the Prince of Wales Cup drew a large attendance. with a substantial proportion of Maori football enthusiasts. The challengers for the Prince’s trophy were Te Waipounamu, the South Island Maoris, who hoped to lift ithe Cup from Tairawhiti, the holders since last year. Tairawhiti were looked on as likely to win the match, for the Rugby strength among the natives :of the East Coast districts has seldom been stronger than now. Nevertheless, the match was expected to provide an exciting and spectacular tussle. In the curtain-raiser, Marist and Old Boys B were scheduled to meet in a play-off for the junior competition championship, these teams having scored the same number of competition points in the season. The class of Rugby seen in their previous meeting was such that a great number of patrons were drawn early to the scene to-day, confident of seeing a fast and even match. The scores at 2.30 p.m. were: Marist .. .. .. .. 7 Old Boys B 0
