ATTEMPT AT UNITY
N.S.W. LABOUR MOVEMENT FACTIONS CONFER (Reed. August 28, 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, August 28. A conference of the Lang and Heffron factions of the New South Wales Labour movement sat during the week-end under the direction of officers of the Federal Australian Labour Party, and endeavoured toobtain unity in the party. The conference, by 204 votes to 166, rejected a proposal by the Lang party that the conference should continue to elect the leader of the Parliamentary Labour caucus, and the caucus was instructed to meet within a fortnight to elect a leader. The effect of the decision was to end dictatorial powers conferred on Mr. Lang at th£ 1927 Labour conference.
Labour officials believe that Mr. Lang will be defeated at the ballot for leadership and also that Mr. Heffron will not have sufficient support to gain the position. The Sydney Morning Herald says that the Labour unity conference resulted in a sweeping victory for the Heffron party, -which has now become the official Labour Party in New South Wales.
