NO WORK IN MINES
DECISION BY UNION G LEN AFTON - MACDONALD JOB OF AGED ATTENDANT (Per Presa Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The 400 men who work at the MacDonald and Glen Afton coal mines have decided to follow an order posted during the week-end by Mr. T Hall, the secretary to the Northern Miners’ Union that “until further notice there will be no work for members of the Glen Afton and MacDonald branches of the union on and after Monday,. August.2B.” This action follows a deadlock over the dismissal of the . 76-year-old man three weeks ago. This will be the second strike within-three weeks at these two minds and for the same reason. , ...i.. . ■ The management considered' the man was no longer capable of carrying out his duties 1 efficiently and that the Social Security Act would well provide for him. Three weeks ago the men ceased work, but after two days of idleness they decided to return to work and leave the negotiations with Ithd union! executive. The negotiations have apparently failed
