MARIST CHAMPIONS

JUNIOR GRADE FINAL TRY AND FIELD GOAL OLD BOYS B BEATEN Marist 7 pts. Old Boys B . . 3 Marist juniors completed a remarkable Rugby treble for their club in Gisborne on Saturday, when they won the play-off against Old Boys B and lifted the junior championship. The club’s seniors and thirds had previously won their respective grade championships. Old Boys B were playing a fine game, but they were matched at every point by their opponents, who took advantage of every opportunity and gave a smart and consistent display, well balanced in the forwards and backs. The Marist points came from a field goal and a try, unconverted, while Old Boys B goaled a penalty kick. There was no score in the first half, during which Old Boys had the advantage of a light breeze. In the second half Marist launched a series l of attacks, in which forwards and backs took equal parts, forcing back Old Boys and securing a position on their 25-yd. line. From a scrum there, the ball came to Ray Thompson, who snapped a kick over the goal from the field. B. Quinn Outpaces Defence

Not long afterwards, B. Quinn’s pace enabled him to outpace the Old Boys’ defence after Thomson had paved the way with a good run through the middle of Old Boys. The Old Boys’ goal was gained from a penalty kick, taken right on time by R. Carroll, from a position right in front of the goal. Two players of the beaten team, Green and H. Sebire, suffered injuries which occasioned their removal from the field. For the winners, J. Cleary, Rob Thomson, and K. Hall were the best forwards, and S. Lee, Ray Thomson, R.‘ Friar and J. Hepburn were the most consistent backs. Old Boys’ best forwards were .K. Davoren, N. Summersby, A. Eastwood and K. Davoren, while R. Carroll, H. Sebire and A. Falconer were good in the back division.

Mr. J. Lockwood was the referee.
