VALVERN DEPARTS

NEW PLYMOUTH MISSION

TRACK CONDITIONS SUIT

CUP WINNER AS A HACK

By “Trenton"

The Ellerslie-trained Valvern left on Wednesday for New Plymouth to compete at the combined meeting of the Egmont-Wanganui and Taranaki Hunt Clubs next Thursday and Saturday. Valvern, who is by Vaals, is engaged in the five-furlong novice events. She has an abundance of speed and may be capable of running prominently on the turning track.

Ptonyhurst Mares

Two Stonyhul’st mares, Rivalry and Wild Hind, were shipped to Hastings this week to visit Bulandshar. The former mare produced Winning Rival tc the Blandford horse in 1936 and this is her second mating with him. In four starts last season, W'inning Rival annexed the McLean Stakes at Dunedin and the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes, beating Beaulivre. • Rivalry comes from a family of very good-looking horses, the majority of, whom were fine performers. The dam of Rivalry was the Martian mare, Equipment, who in later years produced successively Full Feather, Sempet Paratus,'Ball Dress and Cricket Pat. Galilee Mated Mr. E. H. Cucksey’s well-performed mare Galilee, by Chief Ruler from Lady Bede, has finished her racing career and is to be mated with the Phalaris horse Phaleron Bay. Early Arrivals Black Thread and Raana are the first of the arrivals at New Plymouth, states an exchange. Related to Balinavar Ballivor is the name registered for the two-year-old gelding by Bambury from Spring Son. This youngster is a half-brother to that good performer, Balinavar. Son of Posterity The Ellerslie trainer I. Tucker i: idtrctding a two-year-old colt by Po_terity from Mira'belle 11, and thi youngster will soon join the regular workers at headquarters. This two-year-old was bought for 220gns. as a yearling at the Trentham sales last January. Likes the Going Easy Royal Appellant has been kept in regular work throughout the winter, but his tasks since winning the Cornwall Handicap last June have not been over strenuous. He looks bright and muscular and will need little fast work to fit him for racing. As Royal Appellant usually performs best when the sting is out of the ground there will be plenty of opportunities for him during the next few months. Has Had Every Chance Although Hot Shot has only been in work for a ibrief period he has made good progress ancl is now in the right condition to begin a solid preparation. This five-year-old has been given plenty of time to develop, and if he fails to make good no excuses can be made for him. Australian Trip Arrangements have been made to take Gold Salute to Australia next week for spring racing. A. E. Ellis has contracted to ride him whenever he is available. Gold Salute was not thoroughly wound up at the Grand National meeting, nevertheless he had a very ’impressive success in the second division of the Longbeach Handicap and he should have a profitable trip. Now a Hack Winner of an Auckland Trotting Cup,, two Dunedin Trotting Cups, and £6250 in stakes, the pacer Willow Wave is to be used as a shepherd's hack on a farm at Gore, near where he was bred. He is a product of the famous breeding establishment at Riversdale, known as Willowbank, where Win Soon, winner of the New Zealand Trotting Cup of 1914, also was born.

Willow Wave was a brilliant pacer and a great stayer, but a horse of moods, and one that was a trial of patience to those who handled him.
